WEEKEND PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

BALINGUP MEDIEVAL  CARNIVAL

24 – 26th August 2012

.

Good news to all photography lovers. Two of WA’s internationally renowned portrait and documentary photographers – Claire Martin (Perth) and Sam Harris (Balingup) will be running an intensive weekend workshop during the Medieval Carnival in Balingup this year. The workshop package includes two nights accommodation in Balingup’s serene & charming Origins Center (where the workshop will be run from)  and weekend passes to the carnival.

With so many colourful and vivid scenes to capture such as knights jousting, medieval monks and maids, blacksmiths at work, a royal precession and the traditional burning of the dragon, the Balingup Medieval Carnival is a photographer’s dream.

This workshop promises to be very dynamic, offering students inside access to one of WA’s most exciting, colorful and unique events.  With the expert support and guidance of Claire and Sam, students will develop their portfolio, practice studio style portraiture and documentary reportage. The workshop begins on Friday late afternoon with a short induction class followed by an early evening visit to the famous candle lit Medieval banquet… Saturday promises a full program covering all aspects of the carnival as well as editing sessions, one-to-one mentoring and  continues through to conclude on Sunday afternoon. The best images will be featured as a Medieval Carnival calendar.

The workshop is open to 15 intermediate level photographers and Harris-Martin says: “Be prepared to work hard to get better results with 100% dedication. You will be pushed to produce your best work yet! But don’t worry it’s also lots of fun with a casual, friendly, family like atmosphere”.

Are you taking great pictures but aren’t sure what to do to take them to the next level? Do you seek to communicate your point of view on the world? Have you admired great documentary or street photography and wondered how it is achieved? The answer lies in developing a body of photographic work that is personal to you – A series of images on one subject that show your creativity, technical skill and point of view. The topic could be anything from photographing your family to documenting social issues like homelessness or exploring abstract ideas like memories or feelings photographically. The important thing is that you have a point of view and tell a story with your pictures in a concise and original way. Developing a body of work not only provides you with a more sophisticated portfolio, working in this way is a must for exhibition, editorial work, book production and proving yourself as a consistent shooter.

.

Over 5 full days we will help you develop ideas and execute them, as well as inspire and educate you about where the documentary photography industry is today and who some of its great shooters are. Prepare to work hard, have fun and produce work you can truly be proud of.

.

WORKSHOP REQUIREMENTS

This workshop is aimed at photographers developing their first significant body of work. We will help to get you where you need to go for your next personal step as a photographer. You must be competent & comfortable using your camera, have a portfolio / selection of images and be able to use an editing software of your choice i.e lightroom, aperture, iphoto, picasa etc.

.

We will help get you thinking and seeing better, with more critical awareness of the creative process. It’s ok if you don’t already have a project to work on as it’s as much about being inspired, having a go, learning ad getting great pictures in the process.

SAM HARRIS

Born and raised in the suburbs of south London, Sam Harris is a self-taught photographer. In his late teens he made a simple home darkroom and experimented nightly whilst listening to records. Combining these passions led him to start freelancing in the London music industry of the early 90s, making album sleeve art. Sam went on to shoot editorial portraits and features for leading UK publications such as The Sunday Times Magazine, Esquire, Dazed & Confused and The Telegraph Magazine.

.

In 2002 he re-evaluated his lifestyle and photographic direction and left London with his family to travel slowly for several years. During this period he began the process of turning his camera inwards… In 2008 he settled with his family in the forests of South Western Australia. His acclaimed series Postcards from Home has been exhibited internationally as well as recently winning the 2011 Momento Pro Photobook of the Year award.
